Dairy proteins and their aliases

Casein and caseinates appear with particular frequency in non-dairy creamers and processed cheeses — "non-dairy" has no legal protection against containing sodium caseinate in the United States. Insect-derived glazes and dyes

Carmine (E120) — a red colorant from crushed cochineal insects; ~70,000 insects per 500g of dye. Shellac (E904) — a lac insect secretion used to glaze candies and citrus fruit. Beeswax (E901) — produced by honeybees. All three are categorically non-vegan with no plant-based alternative.

Specialty processing derivatives

Isinglass — fish bladder gelatin used to clarify beer and wine. L-Cysteine (E920) — a bread dough conditioner, majority derived from human hair or poultry feathers (synthetic and fermentation-derived versions exist but aren't distinguished without certification). Conventional white cane sugar in the U.S. is frequently processed through bone char — a decolorizing filter made from calcinated cattle bones.
